BOOK ADVENTURE http://www.bookadventure.com This is a web-based reading program for children ages 5-14. It includes activities and printable items like bookmarks and certificates to encourage children to read. Teachers can register a class so individual students sign in, get book suggestions and take multiple choice quizzes on books that they have read.

NEWSWRITING WITH SCHOLASTIC EDITORS http://teacher.scholastic.com/writewit/news/tguide.htm At this site students in grades 4-8 learn to write newspaper articles with help from writers from Scholastic's magazine group. Students read sample articles and get writing tips and techniques to help them determine a topic and develop their own news stories. The Scholastic writers also give students guidelines on revising their writing, and provide general comments, suggestions, and ideas about writing news stories. Upon completion of the activity, students can publish their work online and print out Certificates of Achievement.

  BIOGRAPHY WRITING WITH THE SCHOLASTIC STAFF http://teacher.scholastic.com/writewit/biograph/tguide.htm This is great site for students wanting to write biographies. They will learn how to research and write a biographical sketch. In the process, they’ll learn research and writing strategies from the scholastic staff as well as a warm-up exercise to get them started. Finally, they write a biographical sketch of their own. Upon completion of the workshop students will receive a personalized Certificate of Achievement signed by the Scholastic writing staff.
