ROGATE Summer 1999 Reading Project Requirements

Below are the requirements for each book that you read. You may use this as a format for presenting your information about each book. If you have another way that you think would be better to present the contact Mr. Mains before you start. You do not have to use this format if you create a better one. Any and all projects can be negotiated. See Mr. Mains if you think that you have a better way to present your book. All projects will be posted on the DMS website so we can learn about the other books being read.

For each book do the following:

OVERALL

Choose one of the following from this category. Your answer should run approximately one paragraph.

bullet1. Present your overall opinion of this book. Was it interesting to read? Was it believable? Was it enjoyable? Why or why not?
bullet2. What knowledge have you gained from the experience of reading this book? Has this book in any way affected your thinking? If so, how? If not, why not?
bullet3. Discuss the author's writing style. Include the complexity of his or her writing, the difficulty of the vocabulary; the depth of the plot. What makes this author's writing style different from others you have read?

CHARACTERS

Choose one of the following from this category. Your answer should run approximately two paragraphs.

bullet1. If you were to cast yourself as one of the characters in this book, who would you be? Why? How do you think your taking the character's place may have changed the outcome of the story?
bullet2. Identify the two most important characters in the book and discuss their similarities and differences.

SETTING

Choose one of the following from this category. Your answer should run approximately two paragraphs.

bullet1. Place the book in a different setting - either in a different place or in a different time (or both). Then discuss how it would be different, talking about both the characters and the story itself.
bullet2. Describe the book's setting. Explain why it was important to the story.

PLOT

Answer #1 plus one of the following three questions. Besides #1, (which uses a unique format) your answers should be several paragraphs long - organized and detailed.

bullet1. Create a detailed timeline of the events in the book.
bullet2. Assign yourself the job of on-the-spot reporter who witnesses the climax of the plot. File your "news story".
bullet3. Identify one important event early in the book and imagine it coming out differently. Describe how the rest of the plot would change.
bullet4. Imagine a different ending for the book and write it down. Then argue which ending is better, and explain why.
bullet5. Write a summary of the book in a style mimicking the author's own style.

THEME

Your answer should run approximately one paragraph.

bulletIdentify the book's theme (a lesson about life the author is attempting to get to you, the reader). Then state why you agree or disagree with the theme you identified.

Turning in your project.

Type your responses and e-mail them to Mr. Mains. If you do not have access to e-mail, talk to Mr. Mains about how you can turn in your work.

You will need to set up your own schedule for these projects and e-mail it to Mr. Mains before school ends. You set the deadlines for the 3 books that you plan to read. (I suggest 1 project in June, 1 in July and 1 in August, but you may want to set other deadlines for yourself.)
