School Nursing Service

The  services of school nurses are available in all of Dover's schools.  If your child becomes ill, the school nurse will telephone you.  If you cannot be reached at home, the nurse will call someone designated by you to care for your child.  Parents are required to provide the school with updated telephone numbers and emergency information which will be used in the case of accident or sudden illness.

During the school year our nurses function in many different ways.  They plan health programs, administer hearing, vision, and scoliosis screening to all children ages ten through eighteen years, tuberculosis tests, record health and accident information, and work with parents to promote the health and well-being of school children.  Nurses also report the findings of medical and dental examinations to parents, explaining action to be taken when necessary.

Illness and Emergency

    1. When your child is ill in the morning or previous evening, do not send him/her to school.  Signs and symptoms of illness are temperature of 100° or over, sore throat with tender swollen glands, running nose, earache, cough, reddened eyes with discharge, skin rash or scabs, aches and pains, vomiting or diarrhea with or without stomach pain.  Keep your child home and notify your family doctor.

2. Be prepared to provide transportation home if you are notified that your child has become sick at school.

3. If your child contracts a contagious disease or is likely to be absent from school for three or more days, please notify the school nurse or principal.

4. Children in kindergarten through eighth grade require a note from home explaining their absence when they return to school.

Medications

No medication will be administered to pupils in school except by the Professional Registered School Nurse or the pupil's parent.  Medication must be delivered to the school nurse in its original labeled container by the parent.  This must be accompanied by the parent's written request for its administration and by the physician's statement.  Short term prescription medications must be brought to the nurse with the student's name and directions on the label.  A parent's permission note must accompany the medicine.  Long term medications should be brought to the school in the original container and properly labeled.  A doctor's note and parent's permission is required.

Over the counter medications may be given with parental permission and a written note from the doctor.

Scoliosis
What is it?

Scoliosis is a sideways (lateral) curving of the spine.  One in ten persons will have scoliosis.  Two to three persons in every 1,000 will need active treatment for a progressive condition.  In one out of every 1,000 cases surgery may be necessary.  It affects girls more than boys.  It first develops between the ages of 10 and 15.

Treatment

The best treatment for scoliosis begins with early detection.  The school nurse will conduct examinations during the next month.  The procedure for screening is a simple one.  The student stands with his back to the screener with clothing loosened or removed to expose their back.

If your child is currently under treatment for a spinal problem, or if you would rather not have your child screened, please call the school nurse, Jessica Ewer at 989-2045.
